| BIOLOGicalSignificance | Rotavirusisthemostcommoncauseofseverediarrhoeaamonginfantsandyoungchildren.Itisagenusofdouble-strandedRNAvirusinthefamilyReoviridae.Bytheageoffive,nearlyeverychildintheworldhasbeeninfectedwithrotavirusatleastonce.However,witheachinfection,immunitydevelops,andsubsequentinfectionsarelesssevere;adultsarerarelyaffected.Therearefivespeciesofthisvirus,referredtoasA,B,C,D,andE.RotavirusA,themostcommon,causesmorethan90%ofinfectionsinhumans.Thevirusistransmittedbythefaecal-oralroute.Itinfectsanddamagesthecellsthatlinethesmallintestineandcausesgastroenteritis(whichisoftencalled"stomachflu"despitehavingnorelationtoinfluenza).Therearesixviralproteins(VPs)thatformthevirusparticle(virion).ThesestructuralproteinsarecalledVP1,VP2,VP3,VP4,VP6andVP7.InadditiontotheVPs,therearesixnonstructuralproteins(NSPs),thatareonlyproducedincellsinfectedbyrotavirus.ThesearecalledNSP1,NSP2,NSP3,NSP4,NSP5andNSP6. |
