| BIOLOGicalSignificance | alpha-1-Acidglycoprotein(AGP)isaproteinwithamolecularweightof41~43kDaandisheavilyglycosylated(45%).Duetothepresenceofsialicacids,itisnegativelycharged(pI=2.7-3.2).AGPisoneofthemajoracutephaseproteinsinhumans.Asmostacutephaseproteins,itsserumconcentrationincreasesinresponsetosystemictissueinjury,inflammationorinfection,andthesechangesinserumproteinconcentrationshavebeencorrelatedwithincreasesinhepaticsynthesis.Also,itsglycosylationpatterncanchangedependingonthetypeofinflammation.ThebiologicalfunctionofAGPremainsunknown;however,AGPisbelievedtoregulatetheinteractionbetweenbloodcellsandendothelialcells,andregulatestheextravasationofthecellsduringinfectionandinflammation. |
